san pedro de atacama

my last big trip during the semester was to the north of chile, from where i would head to bolivia for a 4 day tour of the desert!

i slept over at my friend's homestay so that we could share a taxi to go to the airport for our 6:55 am flight to Calama, Chile. the radio taxi picked us up at 5:00 am. needless to say, i didn't get any sleep that night but this was all made better when we arrived at the airport. it turns out that i actually never need to go back to the united states to satisfy my food cravings, i just need to head to santiago international airport because there was a CINNABON! yes. a cinnabon. and i was the happiest girl ever.

after landing in Calama we took a shuttle to San Pedro de Atacama - the DRIEST DESERT IN THE WORLD (i have statistical graphs from my ecology classes to prove it to you)

here's some pictures of the town of San Pedro, lots and lots of adobe!

lunch - parillada - a specific way to grill meat. i'm by no means a big meat person and ended up feeding some of my portion to the stray dogs outside. they especially enjoyed the blood sausage.
scarred from tandem biking here.
solar cooker! using the sun to boil water, booyah!
our itinerary for the day involved
1. SANDBOARDING! in Valle de la Muerte
(this deserves a post of it's own so pictures to come later)
2. salt caves
3. watching the sunset in Valle de la Luna

our tour guide was super chill and played really funny songs, one of which called "Get Spanish" by some guy from Holland. it had silly lyrics such as "hola, supermercado" (hello, supermarket) and i couldn't stop laughing the whole song. here it is on youtube.

salt caves!

sunset at Valle de la Luna!

el volcán licancabur

salt salt salt

the mountains/volcano turned from gold, to red, to purple as the sun was setting
the first star of the evening!
i definitely missed stargazing, since you can never seen any stars in Santiago

we made 2 new friends - Francisco from Santiago, and Paulina, from Belgium - with whom we went out to dinner with!

that night i bought hella tarjetas postales, the lady working at the shop thought it was really funny that i bought 10 identical llama postcards but they were way too awesome to buy only a few. ¡que bonitas!

anddd during the night at our hostel a cat kept getting into the room and jumping on people, jajaja "hahaha" :)
