cerveza y osos

UPDATE: my internship supervisor was indeed in his office so i successfully turned in my report, and i made him promise to email the evaluation form to the study abroad office by friday. it's out of my hands now.

i ALSO am DONE WITH FINALS!!!!

i've realized that semesters are the longest thing of my life and i never want to be stuck in a class that long ever again. i'm pretty excited to get back to the quarter system at UCSB :)

funny story of the day:
after turning in my final to my professor i started to walk away, but he called me back over. i thought he was going to ask me how i felt about the exam, but instead he said:

Profe: "Necesito tu ayuda. Tenemos una discrepancia." ("I need your help. We have a discrepancy")

Me: "Bueno, ¿que cosa?" ("Okay, what?")

Profe: "¿Cómo se pronuncia 'cerveza' en íngles?" ("How do you pronounce 'beer' in english?")

Me: "beer"

Profe: "¿Y cómo se pronuncia 'oso' en íngles?" ("And how do you pronounce 'bear' in english?")

Me: "bear"

glad i could clear that up for him and his ayudante (teaching assistant)! now please give me a way higher score than i deserve on that final exam!

crossing my fingers

remember that really frustrating internship and fifteen page paper i complained about so much over here,  here, and here?

well. IT'S COMPLETE! officially printed and all.

i also took out all the paragraphs bashing my supervisor and made the margins bigger so the version i give him is the same page length as the one i have to turn in to my study abroad director!

i'm taking my evaluation form to my supervisor tomorrow after my LAST FINAL EXAM (woot!), let's hope he actually shows up for our appointment so i never have to see him again. fingers crossed!

fútbol

there was no way i was going to live in south america for 6 months without making it to a professional partido de fútbol (soccer game). but i did end up cutting it pretty close! instead of studying for my final yesterday, i went to a match between Universidad de Chile (the team actually has zero affiliation with the university, kind of misleading), and Colo-Colo (known for being the most flaite - SKETCH!). this game is also known for being muy peligroso (dangerous)

the Colo-Colo section. very segregated from any of the U de Chile fans
to prevent any hospital visits and/or death. this is not an exaggeration.

la U!

Estadio Nacional - the home stadium for U de Chile and also the national team ("la selección")

one of the weirdest things to me was how you couldn't buy WATER anywhere in the stadium. only soda. this has been a reoccurring theme in Chile, water doesn't seem to be a very popular choice of beverage which i am not accustomed to because it's all i drink in California!

the crowd was CRAZY!!! the entire time. and also using tons of profanity. here is a video of everyone yelling "conchatumare" aka "motherfucker" every time a Colo-Colo player was announced before the game started

GOOOOOOL!!!!!!!

please tell me this is legal in the united states.

final score! la U - 4, ColoColo- 0
"chi! chi! chi! le! le le! universidad de chile!"

rafa sad because she's a Colo-Colo fan.
and dre pretending to be happy, because she's also a Colo-Colo fan

the crew! me, dre, rafa, jules, nat :)

equality and graffiti

somehow between all the final papers i have been writing i've made time to get out in the fresh air! this past weekend my friend andrea and i took a stroll around Bellavista to take pictures with the amazing graffiti! on the way we ran into the gay pride march :)

my favorite statue in the city - in Parque Forestal, by Plaza Italia

photos of everyone meeting in Plaza Italia before the march!

and lots of street art!
Barrio Bellavista - "the cultural and bohemian neighborhood of Chile"

sewell y coya

last month i visited the mining towns of Sewell and Coya with EAP. since Chile is the main producer of copper in the WORLD, it made sense why this was a mandatory field trip. Coya wasn't very exciting so i didn't take any pictures, but Sewell was pretty interesting. we took a tour given by a man who grew up in the old mining town and he explained that everyone now lives in the larger city of Rancagua and commutes to the mountains for work. the town was so unbelievably small i could not imagine what it would be like to ever live there.

some stats:
the 10 principal copper-producing countries (from mines)

the 10 principal countries that produce refined copper

principal countries that consume copper exported from chile
